Strictly Come DancingChris McCausland from Chris has already become a favorite with viewers after he blew them away during Saturday’s opening show.
The BBC dance show has returned to screens to celebrate its 20th anniversary, with a fresh line-up of 15 celebrities taking to the dance floor for a pre-recorded opening act.
McCausland, who has appeared on panel shows including I have news for youand Would I lie to you?won fans over with his quick humor during the show.
When hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman were interviewing this year’s cast, McCausland chimed in and mentioned fellow contestant, TV host Dr. Punama Krishana: “Can I just say none of us can believe we managed to get in the same room as a GP!”
At one point he told the hosts: “I might as well make jokes now, I’ve only been here for three weeks.”
McCausland, who is the show’s first blind contestant, lost his sight at age 22 due to an inherited condition called retinitis pigmentosa.
He told the judges he had “no idea” what to expect from the show because of his condition.
Fans were quick to crown McCausland the “best part” of this year’s series, with one viewer writing online: “I think we can all agree that @chrismccausland is already the highlight of this year’s #Strictly!”
Another added that it was a “genius move” by the BBC to get the comedian to take part in the show.
“Just give Chris McCausland a glitter ball NOW,” said another on X/Twitter. “What a happy competitor.”

Another added: “Everyone else can back off. Chris McCausland is already the hero of this show. What an absolute treasure and star!”
In a conversation with The Independent and other media before the show began, McCausland admitted that he and his dance partner were “skiing”, as he had never seen the show and his professional partner Diane Buswell had never taught someone who was blind.
“We’ll have to figure that out as we go along,” he said. “The production team is very flexible. My dance partner is thinking about teaching me. And we wing it. I think this is the best way.”
He then joked, “It’s going to make a lot of things more complicated,” he laughed. “If it wasn’t on live TV, that would be good too!”
McCausland also hosts the ITV Saturday morning series The Chris McCausland Showand younger viewers know him as Trader Rudi on CBeebies me too!
Discussing his motivations for entering the show, he said working in a team was a welcome change from his stand-up work, which can be quite “lonely”.
He admitted that he was reluctant to sign up at first, mostly because he thought it was a “stupid” idea, but changed his mind.
“I wasn’t keen on the idea at first,” he said. “I was immediately like, ‘No, I can’t do that … that’s ridiculous. That’s a stupid question!’ I’m pretty resistant to things and then it takes me a while to get used to it and really think it through. But then I just have to process these things.”
