LOS ANGELES – FX’s “Shogun” made history at Sunday’s 76th Emmy Awards with the first two Japanese actor Emmys ever – for best actor in a drama, Hiroyuki Sonada, followed by best actress, Anna Sawai.
There was also the best drama award for FX’s most expensive series about 17th-century feudal Japan, which won a total of 18 Emmys for best series (14 at last week’s Creative Arts Emmys).
Still, the most slam-dunk winning moment we witnessed backstage at the Emmy Awards was Scottish star and Baby Reindeer creator Richard Gadd trying to tackle his three big trophies (Best Limited Series, Best Actor, Best writer) AND keep his kilt on before posing with co-star Jessica Gunning (who won Best Supporting Actress). The feat required outside help — both for his kilt and the trophies — before Gadd was ready to face the photographers with his prizes.
Here’s what you haven’t seen on TV at Sunday’s Emmy Awards.

Jennifer Aniston: Emmy ticket trouble meltdown with Robert Downey Jr.
Jennifer Aniston’s arrival on the Emmys red carpet in a stunning Oscar de la Renta gown was a very big event, worthy of an announcement over the loudspeaker. The famous “Friends” actress, nominated for her role in “The Morning Show”, had only one problem. Her tickets were not checked by security for an eternal two minutes while Aniston stared away with a look of immovable serenity. Finally the watcher called out, “Why don’t you let her in? You know who it is!”
With that, Aniston sailed past security, posed perfectly for photos, and sailed straight into the theater. All problems were forgotten after she ran into Robert Downey Jr. in the theater. The two hugged and agreed to take the superstar’s photo.
“Let’s go,” Downey Jr. said, hugging Aniston and grinning. “This one will travel.”
‘Ripley’ star Dakota Fanning will wait in line to pay for nachos
Of course, the Peacock Theater had a velvet-draped VIP area for celebrities. But the coolest thing was waiting in the concession line with other guests, including Dakota Fanning. The “Ripley” star braved a 50-strong line and shelled out $8.50 for Tostitos chips and cheese. She enjoyed crisps with friends in her champagne colored Emmy dress, clutch under arm.
Kiwi actor and director Taika Waititi also braved the crowds to buy $17.50 premium cocktails for himself and girlfriend Rita Ora. While Ora was cooling her high heels by the entrance of the theater, Waititi was busy waving ApplePay, holding a number of drinks and frequently asking for selfies. “One second,” Ori could be seen saying while asking for a group photo.
Naomi Watts and Billy Crudup: Emmy’s Cutest Couple ‘Pretty Competitive’
Naomi Watts and husband Billy Crudup received an unofficial award for Couple of the Night. Crudup won Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for “The Morning Show” and called Watts his “eye candy” during his acceptance speech. Watts was nominated but lost the Lead Actress in a Limited Series category to her. role in “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.”
“We’re pretty competitive, but like Scrabble,” Crudup said backstage. He added that the couple, who married last year, are “very supportive.”
That much was clear at the post-Emmy Awards gala, when Watts tended to Crudup’s Emmy while personally engraving the trophy while Crudup chatted nearby with “The Bear” winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach. As the house band played “Hold On, I’m Coming,” a dancing Watts finally grabbed Crudup to take the trophy away. Crudup left with a smile, an Emmy in one hand and a Stella Artois beer in the other.
John Oliver thanks the Emmy Orchestra for interrupting his sad dog talk
John Oliver sparked a lot of laughs with his sudden expletive during a televised speech. While accepting a variety series writing award for “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” the raunchy comedian ordered the orchestra to shut up (in stronger words) as they played him, just as he was thanking his family’s recently deceased dog.
Backstage, Oliver revealed that he’s actually grateful to whoever started the playoff music. After all, they gave him a chance to make a joke out of a sad topic.
“As a Brit and a comedian, I’m not very familiar with honesty, so I didn’t really want to get upset. And, luckily, whoever was on that board said, ‘You can’t take this,'” Oliver said. “I’m very grateful that they gave me a parachute so I can escape my feelings again.”
No one has as much fun with the Emmy Awards (with Selena Gomez) as Medved star Ayo Edebiri
Ayo Edebiri might not repeat her first Emmy win last year for “The Bear.” But the nominated star may have had the most fun at the Emmys, starting with the moment she was terrified of meeting Reba McEntire on the red carpet (“my legs are shaking”).
At the theater, Edebiri ran into “Just Murder in the Building” star Selena Gomez, who was passing by with boyfriend Benny Blanco during a commercial break. The fast-paced group caused a traffic jam during the conversation, and Gomez complimented Edebiri’s Bottega Veneta dress.
“Oh, that old thing,” Edebiri said with a laugh before they embraced. Edebiri said goodbye to Gomez with: “Keep it up old man.”
During the next commercial break, Edeibri paused before posing for a photo for co-star Moss-Bachrach. “I always take bad photos,” Edebiri said, holding the camera. “Does this need to be the focus?”
